Project IL-legible attempts to analyze and understand the intersection of bill sponsorship and financial contributions to legislatures of the Illinois State General Assembly. We pull and join data from different data sources to accomplish this, in addition to reporting on the more interesting findings that we've been able to uncover. Our primary goal is to make Illinois legislation data more accessible and readable for a wider audience.
Our exploration and analysis is limited to legislators that have acted as a primary sponsor on at least one proposed bill. We examine data related to each sponsor for a number of categories - including the donations they have received, the number of bills they have proposed, and the number of bills they have passed. Finally, we assign an "effectiveness score" to rate and compare sponsors within the Illinois General Assembly.
Project IL-legible was developed by a student group within the University of Chicago's Computational Analysis for Public Policy program, using data from Open States and Illinois Sunshine. We are dedicated to continuing to improve the site to make Illinois legislation data transparent and understandable.
